These are the only cookies this site relies on to function, and they are exempt from the consent requirement. They cover things such as remembering a display preference you have set, keeping a form submission secure against cross-site request forgery, and applying basic protection against automated abuse. We want to know which pages are read and which are ignored, so we can write better ones. Our measurement is deliberately aggregate: counts of page views, the page you arrived from, and coarse information such as country and device type. We do not attempt to identify individual visitors, we do not follow you across other websites, we do not build behavioural profiles, and we do not share or sell usage data. Where our measurement can be done without setting a cookie or reading anything already stored on your device, that is how we do it.

No advertising or retargeting cookies. No social network tracking pixels. No cross-site identity graphs or data-broker enrichment. No session recording or heatmap tools that replay what you did on the page. No fingerprinting intended to identify your device without storage. If that changes, this page changes first, and any non-essential cookie will be introduced behind an explicit consent choice rather than a pre-ticked box.

We keep third-party embeds off the site as a matter of course, because an embed usually means the other company's cookies. If we ever embed something that would set cookies, such as a hosted video player, it will be loaded only after you ask for it, and this page will name the provider and link to their own notice. Following an outbound link takes you to a site with its own cookie practices, which we do not control.
